Two forces combine to slow down riders: air drag and inertia. DURA-ACE R9100 wheels are designed to combat these forces through aerodynamic features and reduced rolling resistance. Two new 28mm wide C60 and C40 rim platforms bring a stiffer wheel to enhance forward and side-to-side (lateral) power transfer and, with ultra-light carbon rim heights of 60mm and 40mm, are also designed to reduce air resistance. This allows Dura Ace R9100 C60 wheels, in a real world scenario, to save 16W over Shimano’s current DURA-ACE 9000 C50 wheelset. C24 wheels complete the DURA-ACE lineup giving riders three rim heights to choose from (60mm, 40mm and 24mm). Selected wheels are available as clincher, tubular or tubeless versions with Shimano quick release hubs and the option of road E-thru axles (12mm).Engineered for the next generation of race bike, DURA-ACE R9100 offers top-tier performance across numerous configurations. Available with either Di2 electronic or mechanical shifting, for the first time, riders now have the option of premium DURA-ACE hydraulic disc brake performance. New Shimano technologies further integrate the DURA-ACE as a system, including a new power meter, while riders further integrate with their bike through new E-Tube wireless connectivity. Shimano’s Rider Tuned philosophy and customization of the bicycle’s function also expands with a wider range drivetrain that now includes intuitive Shimano Synchro Shift control.

D2 Rim
Keeps rear derailleur guide pulley an optimum distance from each sprocket. SHIMANO’s Double Servo-Panta Mechanism enables the rear derailleur to move in an optimum path. The guide pulley tracks the cogs closely while moving front to back, optimizing each shift. Perfect tracking contributes to the most accurate SIS shifting. Aerodynamic performance is affected by wind direction. To create the D2 rim, SHIMANO engineers considered both frontal and cross winds, aiming to achieve optimal performance in real-world riding conditions. Extensive prototype testing, in the wind-tunnel and on the road, proved that a wide rim shape with a deep tire bed performs best across a wide range of conditions. At yaw angles ranging from 0 to 15 degrees, the SHIMANO D2 rim profile reduces air drag better than others aero shape rims. This rim design also boosts lateral wheel stiffness and offers improved vertical compliance for increased control, comfort and durability on the road.
OPTBAL Spoke System
The OPTBAL rear wheel spoke system features 21 spokes - 14 on the drive side and 7 on the non-drive side. Cassette spacing in today’s wheels produces unbalanced tension in traditional 1:1 spoke systems. This unbalance is intensified with the 11-speed cassette, producing nearly double the tension on the drive side spokes. Generally high and low tension spokes have respectively tendency toward breaking down and coming loose spoke nipples. Unbalanced tension affects durability and strength. The OPTBAL design rebalances spoke tension, enhancing wheel rigidity and strength for a more durable wheel.
